Tips to Cope With the Holiday Stress

It is that time of the year again, when homes are filled with friends and family, all gathered together to spread the holiday cheer. However, in most cases, what should be an occasion for festivities, carefree laughter and fun often turns into a stressful couple of weeks in which you constantly worry about money and your finances. In this current economy, it has become even more difficult to enjoy the holidays without worrying about money.

In an ideal situation, you should plan for the holidays months in advance. This involves setting aside some money from your monthly budget to cover the holiday expenses. Over the holidays, you will have to shell out a lot of money on gifts, food, decorations, etc. If you carefully plan your budget months in advance, you can be financially relaxed during the holidays.

Most stores have some great offers around the holiday season. You may feel the temptation to take up these offers and shop your heart out, but resist this temptation. Remember that your money could have better use later on in the holiday season when you have to purchase gifts.

I know it is a difficult ask, but try to not use your credit cards around the holiday season. Use cash instead. It is very easy to lose track of your expenses when using a credit card. By using cash, it will be much easier for you to control your spending. Store your credit card somewhere not easily accessible. For the extreme shoppers, you can even try freezing it in a bowl of water.

Finally, before the holiday season begins, make it a point to buy all long lasting festive food items in advance (cranberry sauce, for instance). This will eliminate unncessary trips to the grocery store come holiday season and make your life a bit more simpler.
